Paul Bear Bryant coaching jacket. This jacket was acquired from the family of head baseball coach Tom Chandler. Needing a light jacket, he retrieved it from a pile destined for the trash following his arrival at Texas A&M in the Spring of 1959.

In 1954, Bryant became the head football coach at Texas A&M where he was also the Athletic Director.
In his initial season the Aggies went 1-9. That season had begun with the grueling training camp at Junction, Texas. Those who survived the camp famously became known as the Junction Boys.
By 1956, Bryant had the Aggies in top form. They won the SWC Championship, capped by a 34-21 victory over the Longhorns in Austin.
In 1957, Aggie running back John David Crow won the Heisman Trophy, Bryant's only Heisman award winner. Following the 1957 season Bryant returned to Alabama to become their head football coach.
